⸻ WHY BLAST FIRST?

PREP IS EVERYTHING.

faster than chemical stripping

Abrasive blasting removes rust, paint, and scale in a fraction of the time of chemical stripping, with no hazardous waste disposal requirements.

superior coating adhesion

Blasting creates a microscopic anchor profile on the metal surface that dramatically improves powder coating adhesion, the single most important factor in coating longevity.

removes everything

Old paint, rust, mill scale, weld slag, galvanizing, and surface contaminants, all removed in one pass, leaving bare, clean metal ready for coating.

SAME-SHOP CONVENIENCE

Sandblasting and powder coating under one roof means no transporting bare metal between shops, no re-contamination risk, and faster overall turnaround.

⸻ OUR BLASTING PROCESS

OUR BLASTING PROCESS

01

Assessment

We inspect your part to determine the appropriate media type, blast pressure, and technique. Heavy rust and thick coatings require different approaches than light surface oxidation.

02

Masking

Threaded holes, bearing surfaces, and any areas that should not be blasted are masked off before we begin. We protect what needs protecting.

03

Blasting

The part is blasted to the specified surface profile, typically SSPC-SP6 (Commercial Blast) or SSPC-SP10 (Near-White Metal) for powder coating prep. We confirm the profile before proceeding.

04

Inspection & Cleaning

After blasting, the part is inspected for complete coverage and any remaining contaminants. Compressed air is used to remove all residual media from crevices and blind holes.

05

Immediate Coating (Recommended)

Bare blasted metal begins to flash-rust within hours in humid conditions. We recommend proceeding directly to powder coating, which we can do in the same visit since both services are in-house.

⸻ Wheel SAND BLASTING & MEDIA BLASTING FAQ

QUESTIONS ANSWERED,

PROPERLY

These answers cover the practical details customers ask most often. For exact pricing or project compatibility, contact the shop for a personal recommendation.

Sandblasting can remove rust, old paint, scale, oxidation, and surface buildup from suitable metal parts. It is commonly used when a gate, railing, patio piece, frame, bracket, or fabricated component needs a clean starting point for repair, refinishing, primer, or powder coating. The best preparation method still depends on the metal and the condition of the existing finish.

Wheel powder coating is an oven-cured, dry-applied finish; painting uses liquid coatings. Powder coating is often chosen for an even, durable finish on metal wheels, while paint may suit a different repair or appearance goal. Neither description replaces an inspection: wheel condition, desired color and sheen, prior finishes, and intended use all matter when selecting a refinishing approach.

Proper Motion sandblasts metal projects such as steel gates, railings and fencing, patio furniture, truck, trailer and off-road components, motorcycle frames and brackets, fabricated metal, shop equipment, heavy hardware, and restoration parts. The right approach begins with the metal, its condition, and the finish you want next, so each part is reviewed before preparation begins.

Sandblasting is a commonly used name for abrasive or media blasting, not a wholly separate technology. The process propels abrasive media to clean or profile a surface, with the approach chosen for the metal, its condition, and the next finish. The term “sandblasting” does not mean silica sand is used; Proper Motion evaluates each part before recommending preparation.

Not every metal part is a sandblasting candidate in the same way. Thin metal, intricate features, threads, protected areas, and unknown prior coatings can require special handling or a different preparation approach. Proper Motion evaluates the material, coating condition, protected areas, and intended finish before blasting, so send photos and dimensions before bringing the part in.

Sandblasting can damage unsuitable or poorly handled parts, which is why pressure, media, and masking matter. Thin panels and delicate details warrant particular caution; blasting is not a one-size-fits-all coating-removal process. Proper Motion masks areas that should not be exposed and evaluates the part before creating the required surface profile for the next step.

Yes, sandblasting can be an effective first step before powder coating metal. It removes failed coating, corrosion, and buildup, then creates the appropriate surface profile for the project’s next stage. Proper Motion inspects the cleaned part and can move it toward repair, coating, primer, or pickup. Confirm the intended finish when requesting the job so preparation matches the plan.

For a smoother metal sandblasting estimate, provide the part material, basic dimensions, current condition, desired next step, and any areas that must remain untouched. Photos help Proper Motion assess rust, old paint, scale, buildup, or failed coatings before quoting. Remove or clearly flag non-metal attachments, and discuss unknown coatings in advance so the preparation and masking plan can fit the project.

After sandblasting, coordinate the next finish or pickup promptly and follow the handling plan for that specific part. Bare metal can oxidize after blasting, while the appropriate next step depends on the material, environment, surface condition, and whether it will be repaired, primed, painted, or powder coated. Proper Motion can inspect the cleaned surface and discuss follow-up work.

Sandblasting turnaround depends on the part's size, condition, masking needs, required surface profile, and shop schedule. Repair, primer, or powder coating afterward adds separate steps to the project. Send photos and dimensions before arranging drop-off, and ask Proper Motion to confirm both the blasting completion date and the timeline for any follow-up finish.
